How to Play

Deploy in secret. Place your whole army anywhere on your first three ranks. Your opponent does the same — neither of you can see the other.
The reveal. Both armies appear at once. Read what they built and adapt.
Capture the king. There is no checkmate. You win by taking the enemy king — and lose the moment yours falls.
The shroud. Fog-of-war games skip the reveal entirely: you see only what your pieces can see.

Common Questions

Do I need an account or internet? No account, ever. Almost everything — campaign, vs-bot, pass-and-play, fog of war, the post-game review — works fully offline. The one exception is playing an online game with a friend, which needs a connection.

How do I play a friend online? In CUSTOM, set the mode to ONLINE and host a room; share the four-letter code. Your friend joins from another phone or from shroudchess.com/play in a browser — no app or account needed. Codes last 48 hours.

Where is my progress saved? On your device only. Badges, campaign progress, saved armies and a game in progress are stored locally and never leave your phone.

How do I resume a game? If a game is in progress, a Resume Game button appears on the home screen.

Can I play on my computer? Yes — Shroud runs free in your browser at shroudchess.com/play, with every colour theme unlocked.
