Shroud is a chess variant game — single-player, local two-player, and optional online play against a friend. This policy explains what data the app collects, which is very little.
Shroud does not collect, transmit, or share any personal information. The app has no user accounts and no login. Single-player and local games make no network requests at all; the only time Shroud goes online is if you choose to play an online game with a friend (see Online Multiplayer, below).
Shroud saves the following data locally on your device, in the app's own storage:

Shroud does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or tracking services.
The browser version of Shroud at shroudchess.com works the same way: the game itself makes no network requests once loaded, sets no tracking cookies, and stores your progress only in your own browser. Like any website, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) processes standard technical request logs (such as IP addresses) to serve and secure the site; we do not use them to identify or track you.
If you choose to play online, your moves and deployments are sent to our game server (they have to be — that's the game) and relayed to your opponent. Rooms are identified by a short code, need no account, and are deleted within 48 hours of the last activity. Nothing else is collected: no names, no profiles, no message history — the game has no chat. Offline play remains fully offline.
The Lab lets you build your own positions. If — and only if — you tap SUBMIT, the position you built (the piece layout and any moves) is sent to our server so we can consider featuring it as a daily puzzle. The submission includes a free-text notes box, which is optional: you might leave it blank, describe your idea, or add your name if you'd like to be credited should your position be chosen. A name is only ever shared because you chose to type one — the app never asks for it, and no account is involved. If you never tap SUBMIT, nothing is sent. To have a submission removed, email support@shroudchess.com.
Shroud is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. The only data that ever leaves your device is what you actively choose to send — the moves in an online game, or a position you submit from the Lab — and the game never asks for your age, identity, or contact details.
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
